Recently, Knapp Valley Gardens completed a retaining wall refresh project where the existing railroad tie wall had begun to rot and disintegrate. The landscaping in the area had also become overgrown. The homeowners were wanting a new look, and a simper maintenance routine. They went online to knappvalley.com and requested a landscaping quote. In just a few weeks time, Knapp Valley solved these problems, and the homeowners’ former wall was refreshed and renewed.
Planning is Key
Several obstacles stood in the way of completing the project, so planning was key. The original wall was not built to match the existing grade, creating erosion and water issues next to the home. Access to the site was limited, which made installation of the new wall tricky. The native soil was mostly clay, which doesn’t drain water and can compromise the wall and cause issues in the future.
Knapp Valley came up with a thoughtful plan to address all the hurdles. Our team used multiple pieces of equipment for the install, increased the height of the wall to fight erosion, and amended the clay soil with extra sand and gravel.
A Space to Enjoy for Years to Come
This job took just about a week to finish, even with the added time to remove all of the existing clay. In the end, our happy homeowners were rewarded with a beautiful, worry-free block wall to last for years to come. Comprised of Belgard Sterling wall block in the Sheffield Blend, the wall’s colors were chosen to complement the brick on the home. The refresh was topped off with a new low-maintenance landscape made up of easy-breezy grasses and shrubs in varieties optimized for the yard’s sunlight and soil conditions. Over the years, the plantings will grow into the space, without growing out of it. And, over the years, our homeowners will have more time to enjoy their outdoor spaces, with one big job crossed off the list by Knapp Valley Gardens.
