About the Project

This project was a large-scale re-invention of an existing property on Lake Michigan turning a quaint cottage into a year-round residence. The homeowner’s priority requests were the creation of a small lawn area and re-use of several of existing Kousa Dogwood already growing on site, along with creation of additional parking along the road.

Mocha Ledgestone was used to secure the front dune and define the roadside parking area. Planting pockets were created to soften the hardscape and give movement to the wall. Curved walkways were created to give flow to the two front entrances. Topsoil was brought in for the lawn and planting areas. The existing Dogwoods were carefully removed from the site at the beginning of the project and returned to create accent points and provide summer color. Additional plantings consist of evergreens for winter interest and flowering shrubs and perennials for summer interest. Many varieties of Ornamental Grasses were used to compliment the feel of the lakeshore dunes. Sod was installed in the lawn area for the children to play. Finally, low voltage lighting was added to highlight the ledgestone wall, focal points, and to define the walkway to the front doors.

Landscaping by the lakeshore brings many additional challenges compared to inland projects. The wind and weather can be extreme. The beach sand needs to be stabilized and held in place. Proper plant selection is critical. At Knapp Valley, we have the knowledge, the staff, and the right equipment to work in these conditions and get the job done.
